ATCON believes that the responsibility of ensuring a robust collaborative environment rests with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and industry Association such as ATCON. As we all know that NCC has a mandate to promote collaborative partnership which to a large extent it is absolutely well. ATCON thinks going forward, NCC needs to engage agencies established by state governments across the nation on issues that pertain to the activities of telecoms companies that it is regulating. The reason being that majority of telecoms companies usually have issues with state governments of various states when trying to provide services in those states. In conclusion, ATCON pledges to continue to work with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and its members to deliver seamless telecommunication services for Nigerians.

- Professor Umar Garba Danbata, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC
- Directors at the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)
- Distinguished ATCON NEC Members
- Distinguished ATCON CEOs,
- Captains of Industry
- Gentlemen of the Press
- Ladies and Gentlemen
It is my pleasure to be attending the second edition of the Nigerian Telecom Leadership Summit 2020 which is virtual because of COVID-19 Pandemic. On behalf of the National Executive Council members and Members Companies I want to commend this laudable and telecom industry transforming initiative by the Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC) under the Distinguished leadership of Professor Umar Garba Danbata, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO Nigerian Communications Commission(NCC).
It is heart-warming that this important summit provides a veritable platform to opening discuss on issues that are militating against the growth of the industry, proffer solution and growth initiatives that can improve the telecom industry operating environment. Undoubtedly, this summit has been a blessing to the industry because the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) will have the opportunity to hear from our members as to what to do to further improve the existing operating environment as well as attracting further investment into the sector.
It is also a right step in the right direction as ATCON considers this summit as a proactive and deliberate attempt by the leadership of NCC since the beginning of this year that has shown a passion and determination to sustain the growth in the industry and developed the industry for the betterment of all stakeholders. It should be stress that the expansion of the Nigerian Telecom Industry depends largely on the regulatory frame work that is provided by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC).
Our concerns as leaders in this sector should be towards working to remove barriers to investment that should have accrued to our sector but went to other sector or other countries because of inability as actors in the telecoms sector to make government at all levels to put in place policies and regulations that would attract further investment to the sector. Some of the factors that have militated against the expected growth of the Nigerian Telecom Sector are as follows:
-
- Recently, the Department of Petroleum Resources under the Ministry of Petroleum Resources wrote to some of our members requesting them to obtain license for storage of petroleum product for their various Base Transceiver Station (BTS). We would like NCC to look into this issue and intervene appropriately as some estate store more than 2000litres of petroleum product and those estates have never been ask to obtain license for storing more than 500litres of petroleum product.
- NCC’s intervention is also required in Ogun State as the state is delaying in the issuance of build permit for the construction of new sites for Network expansion. Your kind intervention is required to get the Executive Governor of Ogun State to approve the license that would facilitate more Building permits in Ogun State.
- Access to recently approve CBN Infrastructure Fund
ATCON hopes that this leadership summit would focus much time to look at the aforementioned issues and that have the capacity to reduce the investment that should have come to the sector with all sense of seriousness.
